Thirteen-year-old Leslie Clark has loved horses for as long as she can remember and has been riding since she was six. Although her widowed father cannot afford to give her everything she desires, she works hard to get what she wants. When what she wants, a great horse to show, is taken right out from under her by her rival, Kate Wellesley, Leslie thinks her whole world has been turned upside down--until she finds Lucky (nicknamed Bubba by her father, who thinks he is funny). Then, everything changes.

Readers of BUBBA GOES NATIONAL will be touched by an inspiring story, but they will also learn about the care and showing of horses while they read about Leslie's adventures. Sandwiched in is a lesson that if one is willing to work hard, they can make their dreams come true. 5 of 5 Stars!    Review by   Penny Molinario  (Posted on Monday 09 May, 2011)

The insightful and talented Jennifer Walker manages to get inside of the mind of a 13-year-old with the skill of a seasoned professional. The result is a novel packed full of adventure, drama, interesting horse facts, important lessons, and believable characters. Through Leslie’s example, young readers are reminded that anything is possible if you want it enough and are willing to work hard for it. Jennifer cleverly weaves in accurate details about horse care and competitions, teaching young readers while telling an entertaining and realistic story. The conclusion leaves her readers wondering what will happen next and longing for more adventures with the kids at Green Stables. Bubba Goes National is worthy of a blue ribbon in this reviewer’s winner’s circle!

5 of 5 Stars!    Review by   Lynn Hunter  (Posted on Saturday 30 April, 2011)

Author Jennifer Walker writes the story of a girl, Leslie Clark, who works hard to achieve her dream and desire of showing and owning a horse. Ms. Walker shows the many contrasts between Leslie, the daughter of a working-class widower, and the other girls, whose families can easily afford to support their equine hobbies. There are several worthwhile messages contained within the books. Kids, 'tweens and teens can learn that age does not necessarily diminish value if you treat things right; that perseverance and hard work can pay back beyond your wildest dreams when you are sincere; that how you treat other people is the true measure of who you are, not money, clothes, or things. There are other lessons, as well. The characters are engaging. The story is well-paced. The syntax may include some new terms for those new to the world of horses, but it is a good opportunity for people of all ages to learn new facts and vocabulary. It is a feel-good story, the first in a series, and I am looking forward to the next!
