These are just a handful of the short stories published in this outstanding anthology from Accentuate Writers.
Elements of the Soul will take readers on a journey as diverse as the writers themselves, and as emotional as the touch of a child's hand or the slap of a love gone wrong.
In the pages of this book, readers will find death, devastation and loss; they will also find hope, friendship and faith. The entire gamut of emotions will be run in this anthology, leaving no feeling unturned, no relationship unexamined, no heart untouched, all told in bite-sized portions to satisfy the most voracious reading hunger.
About the Authors:
Accentuate Writers Anthologies are compiled stories from the winners of Accentuate Writers Short Story Anthology Contests. Each author placed, against fierce competition--First, Second, Third, Editor's Choice--to win a coveted position as an author or a poet in this, the very first Accentuate Writers Anthology.
When you purchase an Accentuate Anthology, you know each story has gone through intense judging and editing to be included within the pages of this perfect-bound paperback anthology. Each of the ten talented authors and six exceptional poets come together to share their most engaging short stories, selected by a panel of judges, and meticulously edited and prepared by editor Michelle Devon.
The contest winners and authors for short stories include: Steven Thor Gunnin, Jennifer Walker, Rissa Watkins, Lindsay Maddox, George Kramer, Lucinda Gunnin, Jo Brielyn, M. Lori Motley, Susan Sosbe, L.L. Darroch.
The poetry contest winners fought fierce competition to be featured between the stories to add to the literary value of the anthology. These poets include our featured poet, L.L. Darroch, as well as: Randy Barefoot, Jo Brielyn, Susan Sosbe, Angel Sharum and Felicity Tillack.

Even though the short stories and poems included in the anthology are the winning submissions for four separate themed contests, they are as varied as the authors themselves. Readers are taken on a journey filled with love, hatred, despair, reconciliation, inspiration, revenge and more. The characters run the gamut from pets, to lovers, to children, all the way to zombies. The stories in Elements of the Soul truly are the best of the best and have went through a rigorous judging and editing process to gain inclusion. The poetry included in the anthology is not simply filler material you find in many books. Each poem is also a prize-winning entry and equally worthy of publication. There is truly a story or poem for everyone in this book!
Author Jennifer Walker writes the story of a girl, Leslie Clark, who works hard to achieve her dream and desire of showing and owning a horse. Ms. Walker shows the many contrasts between Leslie, the daughter of a working-class widower, and the other girls, whose families can easily afford to support their equine hobbies. There are several worthwhile messages contained within the books. Kids, 'tweens and teens can learn that age does not necessarily diminish value if you treat things right; that perseverance and hard work can pay back beyond your wildest dreams when you are sincere; that how you treat other people is the true measure of who you are, not money, clothes, or things. There are other lessons, as well. The characters are engaging. The story is well-paced. The syntax may include some new terms for those new to the world of horses, but it is a good opportunity for people of all ages to learn new facts and vocabulary. It is a feel-good story, the first in a series, and I am looking forward to the next!
I will start this book review by stating that I have two stories in this book. It would be silly (and of questionable ethics) to review my own work, so my opinions here are based on the other stories that are not mine. Overall, I found the quality of the stories, editing and formatting in this anthology to be excellent. I don't usually pick up short story anthologies unless someone gives one to me as a gift, but I enjoyed being able to read a complete story in one sitting (i.e., a nice hot soak in the tub or a little light reading before bed). Although the stories were the winning entries in short story contests that were based on themes, the use of those themes varies quite a bit so it's a very eclectic collection.
This book displays the incredible talents of many new authors. I know we will be hearing more from them in the very near future. Each story brought out a different emotion. I laughed, cried, got mad, and couldn't put the book down. Each story took on a life of its own and I couldn't wait to start the next one! I read one story to my 1st grader because the imagery was so wonderful. He hung on to every word and couldn't wait to see what happened next.
There are few books of short stories that contain the amount of writing talent that Element of the Soul has. People from all walks of life, all over the United States and other parts of the world with a common goal - becoming a published writer - came together to reach that goal and succeeded. I cried, laughed, cheered and gasped as I made my way from cover to cover. Elements of the Soul will tug at your heart strings and truly show you how the written word can touch your heart and reach into the depths of your SOUL leaving you wanting to hear more from these wonderful writers.
An excellent collection of short stories from some truly talented authors. I highly recommend this to anyone seeking some interesting new voices.
